Wheeling West Virgina Music
This is part of a series of interviews celebrating the people who make West Virginia music, music in general and the music of Virginia in particular. This concludes a series of interviews with some of West Virginia's most talented musicians.
The hall houses a permanent exhibit explaining how West Virginia became the 35th state in 1863. There is a Civil War Discovery Trail that includes 16 of the state's more than 300 sites and over 1,000 miles of trails, monuments and historic sites.
Other pioneers of Wheeling and other genres include Grammy-winning bluegrass guitarist Billy Cox, who played bass for Jimi Hendrix, and saxophone legend Chu Berry. Among the most important artists who were briefly associated with the jamboree were Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, John Prine, George Harrison and the Grateful Dead. Prominent guest artists were the country singer and songwriter John Wesley Owens from West Virginia. It was mostly a celebration of the history, culture and music of the state, as well as its history as a tourist destination and attraction.
The most intriguing sideman was John Groce, a member of the regionally based West Virginia bluegrass band, who probably played during his time at the Wheeling Jamboree. The guy I know was named after him because he used to be a Wheeling Jamborese employee, and he was the end - everything, for me.
He was born in West Virginia, moved to Nashville to attend Belmont College and signed his first record deal in 1999. He worked at the WWVA Jamboree until he later settled in Ohio.
Chauncey has since built a network of agents and stores, and his record sales in the last two years alone have topped $1 million, with venues in New York City, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia among others.
A record 10,000 fans attended his first sold-out show at the Wheeling Jamboree, which was just named Charley Pride in 1971. I could imagine going to Wheeling and the Jamborese every year for the rest of my life as long as I went.
Lynch will perform at the Wheeling Jamboree on Saturday, July 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 20, and the second stage will be played by local and regional blues artists, including Craig Coffield of Glen Dale, who will bring his band from Delaware after a break. The Wheeling, WV, show will take place on Friday, August 18, from 7: 30 - 8: 00 p.m. and features live music from local artists and a special guest appearance by local singer-songwriter and blues legend Billie Jean King.
There are many sightseeing opportunities in the nearby New River Gorge, and visitors can make short stops at various attractions and listen to the best music of the Appalachians. Here the young at heart meet to play their favourite songs and listen to a mixture of mountain music, represented by local talents. There is mainly bluegrass, but there are also a variety of other genres such as folk, country, blues, rock, jazz, hip-hop and more.
With a stage indoors and outdoors, this music venue is a favorite of the locals and offers acts ranging from heavy metal to reggae. Originally built in 1907 and known as the Grand, there are no bad seats in this picturesque opera house known for early music from Appalachian and bluegrass.
This two-hour performance is broadcast on over 150 radio stations worldwide, giving you the opportunity to listen to more WVmusic on the radio, on TV and even on air in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
